HA1 Task 1 – Technical Glossary

Pixel
The small squares that make up a raster image. They are set out on a grid and pixel can be a different colour this is call colour depth.

Colour Models – RGB and CMYK
A color model is an abstract mathematical model describing the way colors can be represented.

RGB (Red, Green, Blue) are the three main colours of the colour model and this is used for television s.. CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black) when you mix the RGB together it then makes the colours in the middle which are CMYK ( Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black) and is used for print work.

Resolution
resolution is the quality of the image. the higher the resolution the clearer the image is. the lower the resolution the less clearer the image is. but it depends on what you do with the image.

Raster Images: file formats and uses - psd, bmp, gif, tiff, jpg, png

a raster image is an image made up of a grid of pixels and each pixel can be a different colour.
(psd) photo shop documents is a format that only photo shop can use so it keeps all the layers of your image together.

(bmp) bitmap image file it is a raster image file format used to store bitmap digital images.

(gif)graphics interhange format is an image that is animated.

(tiff)tagged image file format used to store raster images.

(jpg) joint photographic experts groups. the file format you use to save pictures too.
(png)portable network graphics used for lossless images

• Vector Images: file formats and uses - eps, wmf, fla, svg, ai
vector images are illustrated images made by the computer by using mathematics to create the image by useing paths and points to map out the image.

eps(Encapsulated postscript) s a DSC-conforming PostScript document with additional restrictions which is intended to be usable as a graphics file format.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Encapsulated_PostScript

wmf (windows metafile) is an image file format originally designed for Microsoft Windows in the 1990s. Windows Metafiles are intended to be portable between applications and may contain both vector graphics and bitmapcomponents. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Metafile

fla (flash) it is a file format used by only adobe flash.

svg ( Scalable Vector Graphics) is an XML-based vector image format for two-dimensional graphics with support for interactivity and animation. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scalable_Vector_Graphics

ai (Artificial intelligence) is the intelligence exhibited by machines or software. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artificial_intelligence

Cross-platform Images: format and uses - pdf
Cross platform images are used for creating electronic documents to be delivered over the internet and to other online services.

pdf(Portable Document Format) is a file format used to present documents in a manner independent of application software, hardware, and operating systems. Each PDF file encapsulates a complete description of a fixed-layout flat document, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portable_Document_Format

Compression - lossy and lossless
lossless images are images compressed and restored to their original quality but take up more memory on the computer.
A lossy image is an image compressed and then restored but you loose part of the image and the quality is not as good. but takes up less memory and space on your computer.

Image Capture Devices – scanner, digital camera, tablet/smartphone image capture devices are all used to capture images by all using a lens to be able to get a picture of the object or thing you are trying to capture.

Storage and Asset Management is used so you can keep your work saved and secure so that it cant be stolen or be in break of the contract with the client and this is done in many ways like, USb drives, a sky drive and using the cloud.
